Metro expands access to healthcare by extending operating hours for 29 clinics

The metro has revealed a list of clinics which will operate for 12 hours, 24 hours and on Saturdays, respectively.

Not everyone has the privilege to take a day off from work to visit a clinic and because of this, the metro has broadened access to healthcare services.

Twenty-nine of the metro’s clinics have extended operating hours from their standard hours.

“The provision of extended service hours is part of the metro’s strategy to reduce the burden of long waiting times at clinics and to improve access to primary health care.

“Five more clinics are earmarked in future to be added to those that operate for 24 hours and 12 hours a day and construction of an additional 10 state-of-the-art healthcare facilities is already in the planning phase to increase accessibility.

“There are currently 94 primary health care facilities in Ekurhuleni,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro.

Services offered at the 24-hour and 12-hour facilities include, but are not limited to, child healthcare services, immunisation, maternal health, management of acute and chronic illnesses, mental health services, as well as HIV counselling and testing.

These extended hour facilities also render allied health services such as rehabilitation services, dental health and maternity services where there is a Midwife Obstetric Unit on site.

The Daveyton Main Community Day Centre, KwaThema Community Health Centre, Nokuthela Ngwenya Community Health Centre, Phillip Moyo Community Health Centre, Esangweni Community Health Centre, Ethafeni Midwife Obstetric Unit, Jabulane Dumane Community Health Centre, Pholapark Community Health Centre and Ramokonopi Community Health Centre are the nine facilities that have extended operating hours to 24 hours.
