Gabriel Esterhuizen reaches century milestone

Residents and staff of the Germiston Association for the Aged celebrated one of their own. Gabriel Esterhuizen reached a milestone and celebrated being 100 years old.

A centenary birthday celebration is one not many people will reach, which is why Germiston Association for the Aged (GAFA) made sure they celebrated Gabriel Esterhuizen’s amazing milestone.

The organisation first held a special church service, last Thursday, followed by a birthday party all in honour of Gabriel, whose birthday was on March 30.

“Gabriel is a wonderful person. We are grateful to have been able to put this together and celebrate with him. We know it is by God’s grace and we hope to celebrate his 110th birthday with him as well,” said Lourens Botha, social auxiliary worker for GAFA.

When Gabriel was called up to the podium to accept his birthday gift he had fewer words to share than those who had preceded him, like Ani Venter, the general manager at the home, who spoke of his great spirit and wished him well.

Gabriel’s birthday cake, which featured images of him and his beloved Mercedes Benz, was sponsored by the Primrose Pick n Pay.

“When I first met Gabriel he was 98.

“He was in the store and we decided to get him a birthday cake to wish him a happy birthday as we had just heard that it was his special day. He came by to say thank you and I was stunned when he told me that that was the first birthday cake he had ever received.

“When we found out he was turning 100 and there was going to be a celebration, we wanted to be a part of it, and celebrate with this great man,” said Gerhard van der Merwe, a representative from Pick n Pay.
