Police investigate the attempted murder of Ward 61 councillor, following shooting

The Organised Crime Unit of the Provincial SAPS is investigating a case of attempted murder following the shooting of Ward 61 councillor Lifa Nkosi.

No arrests have been made following the shooting of Ward 61 councillor Lifa Nkosi.

Nkosi was shot in Palm Ridge on Monday evening while leaving a meeting in the area.

“Nkosi was the last person to leave the meeting,” explained Capt Mega Ndobe, corporate communications official for the Ekurhuleni West Cluster SAPS.

“It is alleged that before he was able to drive off three unknown suspects appeared and shot at his vehicle while he was inside.”

More than 30 cartridges were found on the scene‚ with at least 17 bullets hitting the driver’s side of the car.

“At this stage we cannot say how many bullets hit the councillor but can say he was shot in the body,” he said.

Nkosi was rushed to hospital and is in a stable condition, confirmed Ndobe.

A case of attempted murder was opened by the Eden Park police. It has since been taken over by the Organised Crime Unit of the Provincial SAPS.

The motive for the shooting is unknown and police cannot confirm if it was politically motivated.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact their local police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Alternatively the community can SMS information to 32211.
