Update: Rumours that R24/R21 highway will be blocked by taxis are untrue says Ekurhuleni Taxi Industry

Taxi industry says no highways will be blocked tomorrow.

Rumours circulating on social media claiming that the Ekurhuleni Taxi Industry (ETI) will be blockading the R21/R24 highway and hijacking trucks to block the road tomorrow are untrue.

The GCN spoke to Tebogo Modise, the marketing officer for KTVR Bus Service (PTY) Ltd which is owned by the Ekurhuleni Taxi Industry, who said the protest march is planned from the Kempton Park offices of the taxi industry and the arrangement is that all taxi associations from the north, east and far east of Ekurhuleni will first converge in Kempton Park then proceed to Germiston were they will meet up with taxi associations from the South.

The march will then move from the Germiston Taxi Rank at 10am and marchers will make their way to the Germiston Civic Centre and the mayor‘s office.

ALERT: Ekurhuleni Taxi Industry to stage protest march to the mayor’s office in Germiston

“We have noted that there is a WhatsApp message circulating around suggesting that trucks will be hijacked and used to block the R21 and R24.

“This is not true.

“The focus area of the protest march is in Germiston, where the office of the mayor is located, therefore, we will not disturb traffic flow elsewhere in Ekurhuleni except that taxis all over Ekurhuleni will not be working tomorrow hence we have made a plea to Ekurhuleni’s citizens who normally uses taxis to make alternative arrangements to travel to their places of work or any other destinations,” said Modise.

”The taxi industry has not called for a total shut down.

“We are not intending to negatively affect the normal economic activities of people in Ekurhuleni.

“Any other mode of public transport like the trains will not be blocked from their normal operation.

“No highway will be blocked.

“The only thing we are anticipating is that traffic will be affected as we move from Kempton Park to Germiston as we will be moving in a convoy of taxis and private cars.”
