Library Week offers a wealth of reading fine-free

It is Library Week and in celebration people won’t be fined for overdue books.

Libraries across the metro are celebrating Library Week.

As part of the celebrations, patrons will not be fined for late returns until March 25.

This year’s theme for Fine-Free Library Week is “Libraries – Heart of the Community”, which seeks to emphasise the idea that libraries belong to the community and are hubs of knowledge for community development.

“Libraries are so much more than just books, they reflect and serve communities according to their needs,” said Ekurhuleni’s MMC for community services, Clr Dora Mlambo.

“We are pleading with library users to return all overdue material they have borrowed in order to allow others to benefit from it,” she said.

Library Week also recognises the vital role played by school, public, university and other special libraries.

They offer vital resources to address community needs and are places where people gather to interface over community issues.

Moreover, libraries are also central to the aspirations of members of the community by providing education.
