Illegal firearm found hidden under carpet

Primrose police apprehend man for possession of an unlicensed firearm in Primrose.

A man recognised a suspect who allegedly robbed him in Kempton Park while he was walking in Beaconsfield Avenue, in Primrose, last Tuesday.

He managed to flag down a passing police patrol vehicle and informed them of what he had seen.

“Officers took the man to Rietfontein Road, where he identified the suspect, who was working as a security guard,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose SAPS.

Police arrested the security guard.

Officers found a firearm hidden under a blue carpet during a search of the man’s shack in Marathon informal settlement.

“The accused was unable to provide officers with a valid licence for the firearm,” said Maome.

The suspect will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon for possession of an unlicensed firearm, after which he will be handed over to the Kempton Park police to face robbery charges.
