EMPD, SAPS on a mission to clear Elsburg streets of drug lords

The EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit hit the streets in numbers to rid Elsburg of drug dealers.

The EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit set out on a mission to rid the streets of Elsburg of drug dealers last Wednesday, between 10am and 11.30am.

The targeted streets were Voortrekker, Mare, Dolly and Machine as they are alleged to be populated by drug dealers who also operate at an Elsburg shopping centre and the surrounding residential areas daily.

On arrival, some alleged dealers fled the scene but the police managed to apprehend two suspects who were found in possession of four packets of crystal meth and four packets of dagga.

The dagga and crystal meth seized both weighed eight grams, respectively.

“During the detention process one suspect was uncuffed in order to sign his notice of rights but before signing the document he managed to jump over the police and pick up three packets of drugs on the counter, which he chewed with the intention of destroying evidence,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

“The suspect was further charged with defeating the ends of justice after saying he would rather die than go back to jail.”

Medical assistance was arranged to flush the drugs out of his system but the suspect refused to be treated and the medical personnel could only perform first aid on him to ensure he was fit to be detained.

“The suspects, aged between 23 and 39, were detained in Elsburg SAPS custody and will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon,” said Phooko.
