Dawnview resident in court on four counts of cruelty to animals

Germiston SPCA sends stern warning to community following the fatal shooting of a cat with a pellet gun.

A Dawnview resident has appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on four counts of cruelty to animals.

This was after a cat was fatally shot with a pellet gun in May 2017.

“The Germiston SPCA received a complaint about a cat that had been shot and killed with a pellet gun, after which it had been thrown over the wall into a neighbour’s yard,” explained Burt Coetzee, senior inspector and manager of the Germiston SPCA.

Coetzee immediately responded to the call and investigated the case.

“A ginger cat was found and after a veterinary examination it was confirmed that the cat had in fact been shot twice with a pellet gun,” said Coetzee.

Four counts of cruelty to animals were opened, in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, against the Dawnview resident allegedly responsible for the death.

The accused appeared in court on February 15 and was given an opportunity to review the video and graphical evidence.

“After pleading not guilty the court case was postponed to March 12,” Coetzee explained.

Following this incident, the SPCA has sent out a stern warning to anyone who shoots an animal with a pellet gun or a kettie or throws a rock at an animal.

“This causes extreme amounts of pain and suffering and is simply unnecessary, not just to the animal but also to the owner who may lose a pet,” said Coetzee.
