Police tackle the illegal sale of alcohol

Illegal tavern closed in Makause informal settlement during recent police operation.

In an effort to curb the illegal sale of alcohol in Primrose’s informal settlements, police continue to patrol the area in special operations.

During a recent operation police visited the Makause informal settlement where they closed down one illegal tavern, arrested the 49-year-old owner, and confiscated large volumes of alcohol.

“While officers were on a foot patrol they noticed several people purchasing alcohol from a tavern.

“They entered the establishment and asked to speak to the owner,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

When she was unable to supply officers with her liquor license she was arrested and taken to the Primrose Police Station.

She was later released on a warning after paying an admission of guilt fine.

“We once again warn the community of Makause and other informal settlements to refrain from selling liquor without a valid licence as this is a crime,” Maome said.

“We will continue to hold similar operations week in and week out until we win the war against the illegal sale of alcohol in the informal settlements.”

The confiscated alcohol was taken to the Primrose Police Station where it will be destroyed.
