Germiston Scouts celebrate 110 years

The Germiston Scouts celebrated their 110th-year reunion at their home, the First Germiston Scout Hall.

The First Germiston Scout Group celebrated their 110th reunion last Saturday afternoon, and the GCN spent the day with the scouts, cubs and rovers.

The event, which marked a spectacular milestone for the organisation, was held at their home, the First Germiston Scout Hall, on Vimy Ridge Road, Delville.

The day saw current, past and future scouts commemorate the group.

Some members had not seen each other since the last scout camp, last year, while others had gone years without seeing each other and as a result, the venue was filled with jubilance.

Eline Lotter, Jason Brandford and Meghan Brandford were at the 110th First Germiston Scout Group reunion with their pugs. They were welcomed by a few of the cubs.

Speaking to the GCN, Brownwyn Lyndon of the First Germiston Scouts said, “To celebrate today, we created a time capsule.

“Everyone put an item in the box; we buried it and will dig it up in ten years.”

“When we reached 100 years, we celebrated with a formal sit down event, this time around we wanted to enjoy the outdoors and do something different.

“We had a master of ceremonies who made a few announcements and a motivational speaker, Robby Kojetin, who shared a few motivating words with our guests.”

The Scouts have many traditions embedded in their history and one of those traditions is that they keep the ashes from each campfire they make.

They will now add the tradition of making a ten-year time capsule.

The cubs were all enraptured by the jumping castle on site, some of the scouts were putting on what seemed to be a ‘play-by-play’ of how to conduct a talent show in the hall and others were preoccupied with sorting their objects to put in the time capsule.

There were tables and chairs carefully arranged and each table had a patrol group card neatly placed, suggesting that each guest should sit at the table with the patrol group they belong to.

The rhino, elephant, and sable are the current patrol groups available at the Germiston Scouts.

While past and current Scouts filled the tables, others opted for the picnic option, enjoying the shade on blankets and camp chairs.

One of the Scouts, Kaitlyn Dabbs explained the significance of the day to the GCN.

“The First Germiston Scout Group started on this day, that’s why this anniversary is dear to our hearts, being a scout myself I am glad that after all these years we are still going.”
