‘Let our actions count. It is my right to know my status. Prevention is my responsibility,’ is the topic of this year’s High School Public Speaking Competition, which takes place in knock-out stages until February 13 at customer care centres across Ekurhuleni.
In a bid to educate learners about the risks of HIV/Aids-related infections and unwanted teenage pregnancies, learners are given a platform to talk about these issues as part of the metro’s Reproductive Health Awareness Month activities.
The strongest orators will proceed to the grand finale on February 14 at the Alberton Civic Centre, where they will battle it out and witness the king and queen of debate being crowned.
“Close to 1 500 learners are set to compete in the knock-out rounds, where they will present their strongest points to a panel of judges on how best young people can take action and responsibility when it comes to sexual health,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro.
The Germiston round will take place at the Germiston City Hall today (Wednesday, February 7) from 8am to 3pm.
