Giving children a better chance

More Germiston children will be given the gift of knowing how to read thanks to the Link Literacy Project.

The Link Literacy Project is helping the city’s learners learn how to read.

Klopper Park Primary School saw the official opening of a classroom dedicated to the Link Literacy Project, in October, last year, .

Now a new centre will be opening at Sunnyridge Primary School, situated at 25 Pitts Avenue in Sunnyridge.

The classes at the school are large and there are a number of children from disadvantaged backgrounds who are struggling to learn to read.

The reading programme is completely volunteer-based and volunteers work one-on-one with the children to improve their reading and writing skills, as well as help them attain a better command of English.

“We feel strongly that children need to learn to read so that they can read to learn,” said Megan Maynard, the coordinator for the Link Literacy Project.

“We are looking for volunteers who can commit to two hours a week, on a Wednesday and/or Thursday.

“Volunteers do not need to be teachers, as training is given.”

Volunteers need to be fluent in English, love children and have a desire to help.

Not only does the centre need volunteers, but also a centre manager, so if you feel you could help in any capacity, contact Megan by email at megan.maynard31@gmail.
