Commuters injured when jumping off train

DEMS attended to four people who were injured on Wednesday when jumping off a train.

An Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue team from the Germiston Central Fire Station promptly responded to Kutalo Train Station, near Dukathole, immediately after receiving a call for assistance at 9.35am on Wednesday morning.

Upon arrival on the scene, they found multiple patients were lying on the ground next to the platform with trauma injuries.

“It is alleged that the train was full and passengers were hanging outside the carriages, including on the front of the train, when it approached the station platform.

“Apparently, the patients miscalculated the distance to the platform and they crashed into the outside wall of the platform.

“The train was travelling from Katlehong to Germiston Train Station,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

Ntladi added that four male patients were accounted for and all sustained fractures to their lower extremities.

Pre-hospital medical treatment was conducted on scene and all the patients were transported to Bertha Gxowa Hospital for further medical care.

The scene was then handed over to Prasa/Metrorail and the police to conduct their investigations on the incident.
