Alleged toy gun robber arrested

Despite using a toy gun, the man was charged with armed robbery - because his victim thought it was real.

A 30-year-old man was arrested by the Katlehong police last Tuesday for armed robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The arrest was made in the Hlongwane Section of Katlehong.

“When officers arrived on the scene of the crime, they were told by the 59-year-old homeowner that while she was watching TV a man forced the door open and threatened her with a firearm,” said Katlehong SAPS spokesperson, Capt Mega Ndobe.

“He grabbed the woman’s plasma TV and ran out of the house.”

As the man ran out of the house, the firearm he had used in the robbery fell out of his pocket.

“When police inspected the firearm they discovered that it was a toy,” said Ndobe.

Officers were able to locate the suspect with the help of the community.

“We were informed where the accused was by members of the community,” Ndobe said.

He was arrested and taken to Katlehong Police Station, where he was formally charged.

“Though the firearm was discovered to be fake, he was still charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm as the victim believed the firearm was real,” Ndobe explained.

The suspect will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
