Metro welcomes newest citizens

Ekurhuleni welcomed a number of bouncy new babies on New Year’s Day.

As we bid farewell to 2017, and welcome in 2018 with salutations and resolutions, some lucky parents ushered in the New Year with new life.

On Monday, January 1, councillor Dora Mlambo, the MMC for community services, together with several senior metro officials, visited three hospitals in Ekurhuleni to welcome several New Year babies.

And they did not turn up empty-handed, either.

The newly born babies at Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg, Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston and Phola Park Community Health Centre in Thokoza were showered with gifts from the visitors.

The gifts included Ekurhuleni branded baby bathtubs, baby blankets and essential baby and mother products.

Tambo Memorial Hospital welcomed five New Year babies, four boys and one

girl, who were born between midnight and 3am on January 1.

Mlambo spoke to the mothers and emphasised the importance of breastfeeding.

“Remember that mother’s milk is the best; I urge you to breastfeed these babies until they are strong enough to eat solid foods.

“Also remember to register for your baby’s birth certificates before leaving the hospital,” she added.

The Ekurhuleni delegation then proceeded to Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston to hand over gifts to the hospital’s three boys and one girl who were born earlier in the day.

First to arrive was baby Stevenson, a pre-term baby who was delivered at 5.15am.

The mother, Lisa Stevenson, was thrilled with the care offered by the hospital staff.

“Thank you to the Bertha Gxowa Hospital staff for assisting and looking after us with love and care through this beautiful yet overwhelming period,” she said.

“I’m also very grateful to the MMC for the baby hamper; I needed it.”

The congratulatory hospital visits were concluded at Phola Park Community Health Centre in Thokoza, where Nokuthula Mabasa gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 6.50am on the first day of the new year.

Nokuthula Mabasa, who gave birth to a baby boy at the Phola Park Community Health Centre in Thokoza, happily receives a baby hamper from MMC for community services Dora Mlambo.
