Illegal tavern owners nabbed

Three illegal taverns closed down in the Makause informal settlement during police operation.

Three illegal taverns were closed down and three men arrested during a Primrose police operation in the Makause informal settlement recently.

“During the operation officers entered the informal settlement on foot and observed residents buying alcohol at the three taverns,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose SAPS.

“Each of the owners was asked for a liquor licence which they could not give to police.”

The three suspects, aged between 23 and 49, were charged with selling liquor without a licence.

Raising awareness about crime in Primrose

A large amount of alcohol was confiscated from each tavern and taken to Primrose Police Station, where it will be destroyed at a later stage.

“We once again warn the community of Makause and other informal settlements to refrain from selling liquor without a valid licence as this is a crime,” Maome said.

“We will continue to hold similar operations week in and week out until we win the war against the illegal sale of alcohol in the informal settlements.”

The arrested suspects were detained at Primrose Police Station, but were later released after paying admission of guilt fines.
