Locally produced film wins big at Ekurhuleni International Film Festival

Locally produced film and web series Thesha won three awards out of four nominations at this year’s awards.

Rhythm Cycle Projects, in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni and the SABC, hosted the second SABC Ekurhuleni International Film Festival on December 2, 2017, at the Germiston Theatre.

Locally produced film and web series Thesha won three awards out of four nominations at this year’s awards.

Thesha is a web series based on the story of two best friends, both unsure about their future, who set out to carve their own path by seeking to make it big in the music industry. From sound equipment rentals, to starting a recording company, the path to success proves to be a dangerous road filled with hard choices, luring temptations, money, sex, violence and betrayal.

Thesha (street slang for “work”) was produced by Izigigaba Advertising and Communications and was nominated for four awards, losing out on the award for Best Director.

On the night, Izigigaba walked away with the following awards:

  1. Best Script
  2. Best Ekurhuleni Film
  3. Best South African Film

“This definitely came as a surprise because the standard was high. Over 2500 films were viewed and we came out tops,” said web series and film producer Nkululeko Ziggy Ravuku.

Season two of Thesha will be shot sometime early next year and according to Ravuku, winning these awards has pushed and motivated the team to do better and come back even stronger for next year’s awards.
