Casual workers are a common sight along many of Germiston’s roads, offering services from gardening to painting and things in between.
Though some may not give these workers a second glace, they are close to Primrose resident Thandeka Gqunta’s heart.
Through personal experiences, Thandeka knows just how difficult it can be for these casual workers to find work.
“Many of these men have families waiting at home, desperate for them to bring home some money so they can have food,” she said passionately.
“On top of this, many of these workers will have nothing to eat for the whole day.”
With this in mind, Thandeka founded the Hour of Prayer Organisation, in 2012, and for the last few years has strived to give casual workers around Germiston a meal, at least once a week, while they hunt for work.
“I try to offer a meal to the workers at least once a week, but it depends completely on if I have enough food, as I work on donations,” she explained.
The feeding scheme focuses on workers in Primrose, Lambton and Elandsfontein.

Meals can be anything from chicken and rice to a sandwich, depending on what Thandeka has available, and if at the end of the day she has extra food, she will make food parcels for orphans and underprivileged families in the area.
“A big thank you goes to Nokukhanya Mkhize, from Kwa-Thema, who has consistently helped with food donations,” she said.
“But more is needed for this ongoing project to be a success.”
Thandeka is, therefore, appealing to the community to help with food donations.
