Epworth needs help to make Christmas special

Epworth Children’s Village is appealing to the community to assist the children this Christmas.

It has been a busy year for Epworth Children’s Village.

The village took in 12 new children bringing their total up to 60 children who will all be at the home over the December holidays.

Epworth is urgently in need of sponsorship of R1 700 per child in order to cover all the child’s expenses over this eight week period, including the buying of school uniforms and more in the new year.

They also need sponsorship for the staff year-end braai (60 people), Christmas lunch for the children (70 people) and an Old Year’s Eve braai for the children (70 people).

“Christmas is a special time of year, especially for children.

“This is a unique time for our Epworth family whose bonds may not be blood-related but is still built on love, hope and care,” said Roberta Ingrato, public relations and human resources manager for Epworth.

“Many of our children arrive at Epworth with no record of connections to anyone in the world and their reality is that no one is going to come looking for them.

“Their best hope is to build relationships with those that know their sense of loss and pain at being abandoned.”

Roberta added that their job as staff at Epworth is to re-ignite hope in the children and kindle the flame of hope for the future.

“Some children are lucky enough to have a home to go to, family and friends or hosts for the full period or part of the festive season.

“Many of these families need both emotional and physical support.

“For example, through the provision of food parcels and home visits once a week to ensure that the family have food whilst the child is in their care and that the child is being cared for with love and consideration,” said Roberta.

“We all know how much it costs to raise a child. This festive season is going to be the first in many where we are anticipating having 60 children in for the long six week holiday and are requesting the community’s assistance.”

The home wants to give them experiences which will build memories and normalise their circumstances, as well as meeting their needs and provide them with the opportunity to feel the spirit of Christmas.

“Please contribute to our holiday of hope by donating towards their holiday and towards accommodating all our newbies. This donation would be used for holiday staff, food, entertainment, outings and lots more,” said Roberta.
