Celebrating babies born too soon

Life Roseacres Hospital celebrated World Prematurity Day, last Friday, with a special talk by paediatrician Dr Hassina Ebrahim and dietician Brittany Rothman.

World Prematurity Day is celebrated globally, on November 17, and celebrates all the babies born too soon.

According to the World Health Organisation, 15 million babies born worldwide are premature.

It is estimated one in 10 newborn babies will be premature and require special care.

Life Roseacres Hospital took the opportunity, on this special day, to educate the hospital’s staff and the community on premature births.

Dr Hassina Ebrahim, a paediatrician at the hospital, who has a passion for newborn babies, with a special interest in managing pre-term babies, gave an informative talk which highlighted important facts and educated attendants on the definition of prematurity and reasons on why pre-term births occur.

Dr Hassina Ebrahim, a paediatrician at Life Roseacres Hospital, led the hospital’s World Prematurity Day celebrations, last Friday.

She also offered some insight into the management and day-to-day care of these infants.

A premature baby is said to be any baby born prior to 37 weeks of completed gestation and these babies generally require admission to a neonatal intensive care unit.

The survival of pre-term babies has improved significantly and much can be done to prevent pre-term births and manage these little babies with the knowledge we have, and continue to gain.

Roseacres dietician, Brittany Rothman, also educated those in attendance on the nutritional problems premature babies encounter, as well as management of these babies’ nutritional needs.

The enthusiastic staff and parents found the talks educational.
