Metro police target drinking and driving

A successful operation by EMPD officers led to the arrest of 33 people.

EMPD members from the Germiston and Thokoza precincts, in conjunction with the EMPD Freeway Unit, conducted a drunken driving operation in the metro last Friday and Saturday.

The operation, which took place from the Friday evening until the early hours of Saturday morning, resulted in the arrest of 33 allegedly intoxicated drivers.

Twenty-seven drivers were caught in both directions of the N12 highway between Etwatwa and Springs. Four others were nabbed on Hattingh Road in Elandsfontein and two more were arrested in the Germiston CBD.

All the arrested drivers were detained at the Germiston, Springs and Bedfordview Police Stations on charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

They are expected to appear in the relevant magistrate’s courts soon.
