Children enjoy once-in-a-lifetime day of flying

The Flying Lions Formation Aerobatic Team pulled out all the stops for charity.

The air was alive with throbbing engines, laughter and the chatter of children at Rand Airport last Sunday.

The reason? It was the Flying Lions Formation Aerobatic Team’s charity day.

The annual event sees the team giving back to children by taking them for flips in their aircraft.

This year five Harvards and one Baron were used to treat the children to high-flying adventures.

Rand Airport waived all landing fees for the day and the event was sponsored by Puma Energy.

Special thanks go to Zohra McDooley-Aimone and her team Olga-Jean Queen, Blake Woodhams, Luyanda Gift Sibiya and Nanje Nowack from Puma Energy.

Fifty-five children from Johannesburg Child Welfare, Eldorado Park Family Crisis Centre, Khayalethu Care Centre, Mount Olive Outreach Centre and Ikusalethu Youth Project took part in the fun-filled day.

The children and volunteers were treated to food and beverages sponsored by Harvard Café and received a special visit from Father Christmas after their flips and lunch.

Gifts and gift bags were sponsored by Puma Energy, Academy Brushware, Academy Air, Nashua and Mango.

The pilots on the day were Arnie Meneghelli, Andrew Blackwood-Murray, Gavin Brown, Dewald Lourens, Jeff Earle, Rodney Chinn and Grant Timms.

And the ground crew were Keagan Foley, Candice Ferreira, Brad Wood, Ashley Cramb, Luke van der Merwe, Sean Bredenkamp, Dean Kleynhans, Susanna Caetano, Rozz and William Tomlinson and Dylan van der Merwe.

A big thank you to everyone who was involved and who made the day extra special for the children.
