Nikki ready to serve the community and animals

Nikki’s focus next year will include the SPCA’s outreach programme in Katlehong, Zonkizizwe and Palm Ridge.

The Germiston SPCA has a new community liaison officer who aims to act as a strong bridge between the community and the SPCA.

Nikki van der Riet recently joined the team and will be making sure all queries and complainants from the public are dealt with efficiently and effectively.

She will also make sure each person who helps the Germiston SPCA is thanked for their assistance, while also managing the society’s social media and fund-raising campaigns.

“Fund-raising is a big part of my duties and I have a number of projects planned for the near future,” Nikki said.

“I am in charge of organising the volunteers (companies and community members) and have also put together a fund-raising group who will lead various projects.”

Nikki, who hails from Edenvale, comes from an art and property background.

“I am a qualified interior decorator, auctioneer and real estate agent and I am still studying real estate,” she said.

“However, I have a great love for animals and enjoy working for the SPCA.

“I believe the SPCA stands for and does a lot of good.”

Next year Nikki will also be focusing on the SPCA’s outreach programme in Katlehong, Zonkizizwe and Palm Ridge.

“We want to get as many animals as possible sterilised, at least 100 a month, and I will be aiming to get corporates on board to help with the project.”

At the moment Nikki is busy with a revamp of the SPCA kennels, and thanks to the generous support of Assumption Convent School a number of kennels are currently being upgraded.

“We also received a donation of enough paint to repaint the entire SPCA, but to aid with the revamp of the kennels we are still in need of bricks, cement and fencing,” she said.

“Any donations would be greatly appreciated.”

Another project of hers is to raise funds for another bakkie for the SPCA as they are desperately in need of one.

When Nikki is not working for the betterment of animals or studying, she enjoys spending time with her husband Richard and children Declan (4) and Riley (almost 2).

“Spare time is definitely family time,” Nikki said.

“We enjoy watching movies and just spending time together as a family.”

The public is welcome to contact Nikki at the Germiston SPCA on 011 825 5033 or email nikkir@spcagermiston.co.za.
