Mother opens case against daughter’s older boyfriend

Man apprehended on a charge of statutory rape by Primrose police.

A mother recently opened a case against her 15-year-old daughter’s 26-year-old boyfriend after she discovered that the pair were allegedly having sex.

“The complainant told officers at the Primrose Police Station, while opening the case, that she had become concerned when her daughter stopped sleeping at home,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The woman further explained that her daughter said she had been staying with friends.

“The mother spoke to her daughter’s friends and discovered she had in fact been sleeping at her older boyfriend’s home,” said Maome.

The family visited the man, who allegedly apologised and promised he would no longer see the young girl.

“The mother recently discovered the pair were still seeing each other and decided to take action by opening a case against him,” Maome said.

The man was arrested on a charge of statutory rape.

He has since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court where he was released on bail and warned to appear in court at a later date.

“We remind the community that sleeping with a child younger than 16 years old is a criminal offence and one can be prosecuted and receive a heavy sentence,” explained Maome.
