Darkness descends after cable theft

Parts of Germiston were left in the dark, last Friday, from the early hours of the morning.

Parts of Germiston were left in the dark from the early hours of the morning, last Friday, due to a problem at the Germiston North Substation.

Areas fed by the substation were affected by the outage, including Malvern East, Symhurst, Tedstoneville Extension One and Fishers’ Hill.

It was reported that the outage was caused by power cable theft, but no official comment was received from the metro, despite numerous attempts by the GCN.

According to Ward 36 councillor Wendy Morgan, Ekurhuleni technicians worked hard to restore the power supply, with some area’s power being restored in the morning and others by the evening.

“The feedback I received about Friday’s outage was that it was caused when cables were stolen in the Knights area.

“This caused a trip at Eskom’s main substation in Isando,” said Morgan.

“Most areas had power restored by Friday morning after the cable was replaced.

“During the testing phase it was discovered that another piece of cable had been stolen and this meant that the remaining areas’ power was only restored by 5pm, as this cable also had to be replaced.”

Morgan is appealing to the community to watch out for any suspicious activity near electrical boxes or substations.

“If you see anything suspicious, report it to the police immediately,” she said.
