First place for local dancer

Delville’s Matthew Hanekom made himself proud when he and his partner, Lauren Matthews, took first place in a dance competition.

Delville has dance talent in the form of Matthew Hanekom.

Matthew is a versatile dancer who recently claimed first place at the Supreme Dance of the Year competition held at Carnival City.

Matthew partnered with Lauren Matthews in the 16-years-and-over duo hip-hop section.

“We got first place as a duo and it feels great to have won it,” said Matthew.

“I only started dancing hip-hop almost a year ago and this is my first hip-hop competition.

“Prior to hip-hop, I did Latin American dancing and won a few competitions.”

Matthew said he started dancing at a young age.

“I have always loved dancing and started when I was in primary school,” said Matthew.

“I grew up doing Latin American dancing and felt I wanted to try something different, hence, my decision to go into hip-hop.

“I took a break from Latin American but I am going back to it because I love and enjoy doing both.

“Thank you to my hip-hop teacher Emmanuel Thodlana for all that he has taught me and continues to teach me.”

Matthew said his recent win has inspired him to enter more competitions.

“I want to continue entering and excelling in both Latin American and hip-hop competitions,” said Matthew.

“I am going to keep pushing and that is my advice to dancers and the youth – keep pushing and never give up.”
