Silkworth extends its reach

Silkworth Recovery and Care Centre has spread its helping hand to Dukathole.

Silkworth Recovery and Care Centre, in Primrose, has been growing from strength to strength since it opened its doors in 2015.

The centre recently launched its new recovery centre at the old Dukathole Clinic in Dukathole.

Silkworth is a non-paying rehabilitation centre for substance abusers.

The centre is run by Belinda and Kevin Maistry who saw the need to open a second centre in Dukathole.

“We have been working with the Dukathole community which is how we identified the community’s needs,” said Belinda.

“The idea is to get more involved in the community and help make people aware that there is hope.”

Belinda said through working with the community they realised that there is a desperate need for prevention and awareness around substance abuse.

“We have started a School Awareness and Prevention programme which means we visit schools and educate learners about substance abuse,” said Belinda.

“Education is better than cure which is why we are educating children about the dangers of substance abuse.

“Through the programme we visit Ekurhuleni Primary School and Colin Mann Primary School every term to raise awareness.

“Although we work with the two schools, the plan is to approach more schools which will also include high schools.”

The school programme aims to reach as many learners as possible in the informal settlement and surrounding areas.

A youth programme and a life skills development programme are among the plans for the community.

“We want to encourage and give the people in the community hope and possibly empower them to achieve greater things in life,” said Belinda.

A jumble sale was among the activities on the day of the launch.

“We sold clothes, household items and other goods while informing people about the new recovery centre,” said Belinda.

“The event was a success with a good turnout.

“It was humbling to see that people were interested in the centre’s services and not just the jumble sale.

“We operate on an anonymous basis and people should feel free to come to us for help.”

The centre is currently sponsored by Macsteel and its representatives were also at the event.

The new centre is situated at 1166A 9th Street, Dukathole.
