Watch: Road a danger for motorists

Three accidents have recently occurred in the same spot on Simon Bekker Road.

Simon Bekker Road is becoming a nightmare for motorists.

As a result of some sort of spillage on the road, three accidents of which the GCN is aware, have occurred at one of the bends in the road.

The GCN was contacted by Alta Potgieter who explained how her vehicle had slipped on the road as she went around the bend.

ā€œThere appears to be a jelly-like substance on the road and after my car slipped, I lost control of it and it rolled,ā€ she said.

Potgieterā€™s car was a write-off and she does not have insurance.

ā€œI am now left without a vehicle and have no way of getting to work,ā€ she said.

ā€œI also hurt my shoulder and back in the accident and I was also getting headaches.ā€

She will be claiming from the metro.

Potgieter added that the metro needs to do something about the road as a matter of urgency as more accidents are going to happen.

Deon van der Merweā€™s company vehicle also rolled in exactly the same area a few weeks later.

ā€œThere was spillage on the road and as I went round the bend, the bakkie slid, hit the pavement and then the vehicle rolled.

ā€œThe vehicle had to be written off due to the extensive damage.ā€

Van der Merwe told the GCN he injured his hands and is still battling to pick things up, as well as his neck, back and knee.

He also has severe bruising all over his body.

ā€œI have also been getting headaches since the accident and will have to have a scan if they do not abate soon,ā€ he said.

He added that last week another woman also had an accident in the same spot.

Both Potgieter and van der Merwe use the road regularly and feel it is becoming a huge danger for motorists.

ā€œDoes someone have to lose their life before the metro will do anything about the problem?ā€ Potgieter asked.

The GCN asked the metro for comment on the matter and Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro, said that a team was on site at the end of June and a blockage was cleared by a contractor using a jet truck roto-rooter.

ā€œWe have had no reports of any blockages since,ā€ he said.

The GCN again requested the metro to look into the matter as the spillage across the road had not been cleaned up but at the time of going to press, no further comment had been received.
