Calculated fun at local school

Mathematics made fun by representatives of Maths our World.

Learners at Ekurhuleni Primary School, in Dukathole, were taught to appreciate other methods of learning mathematics and science by representatives of Maths our World, recently.

Children were divided into groups and played card games which involved three mathematical operations, namely, addition, subtraction and multiplication.

“We are encouraging children to love mathematics and science beyond the traditional classroom,” said co-founder of Maths our World, Bernard Muvhami.

“We also wanted to encourage parents to teach their children that cards are not only used for gambling. Children can learn maths using them.”

Learn to love maths and science

Muvhumi said parents should play these educational games with their children and monitor them if they prefer playing alone.

The local school was not the only venue where Maths our World hosted activities.

“We also had activities simultaneously running at Fumana Secondary School in Katlehong, Golden Walk Shopping Centre and two other schools in the North West province,” said Tom Shupikai, co-founder of Maths our World.

“In total, 742 learners fully participated in the games and as a result, they learnt that mathematics is everywhere and the games could take them off the streets.”

Farai Chinangure is one of the facilitators at Maths our World.

“I love the excitement I see in the children when they play these games,” said Chinangure.

“These games and more have the ability to remove the negativity about mathematics and science.”

Shupikai thanked a few stakeholders who helped make the project a success.

“We, at Maths our World, thank the Department of Science and Technology for providing us with funds to carry out these activities and change the negative attitude that learners and parents have towards learning maths and science,” said Shupikai.

“We extend our special appreciation to Cherine Delport of Fellowes Beswick for donating goodies. We gave it to learners and parents who participated in our activities.”
