Giving small businesses a platform

Primrose resident aims to assist small businesses to grow.

The Picnic and Market event recently held at the Bonfire Park, Germiston, aimed to shine the light on small businesses.

The event is the brainchild of Nikho Mayana, from Primrose.

“This is a monthly event held every last Saturday of the month where we invite small business owners to come exhibit their goods and services,” said Mayana.

“The aim is for people to know about the small businesses in their surrounding areas and hopefully give them support because that is what they need in order for them to grow.”

Among those present and exhibiting were Thoko Nkabinde, Swai Phago and Nancy Mahlatji.

The trio put on display their self-made head wraps, clutch bags and jewellery, among other things.

“This is my first time attending this event and I am impressed,” said Nkabinde.

“We are getting the much-needed exposure which is great, because it is difficult at times to get known as a small business.”

Mahlatji said such initiatives should encourage others.

“This is a great platform to show people that we are doing our own thing,” said Mahlatji.

“We also aim to motivate the youth not to waste and sit on their unique talents but to utilise them effectively and productively.”

Representatives of Exploit Vodka and Green World were also present at the event.

“Exploit Vodka is a new vodka made in South Africa and we are one of the distributors,” said Maditsi Ramaditse.

“We like Mayana’s event – it is well run and provides us with a much-needed platform to grow.

“We hope to attend more of her events.”

Mayana said though there are regular exhibitors, more are still welcome to join.

“We need more people to come and promote their businesses,” said Mayana.

“Let this event inspire the community and government to support it.

“This event is not area-specific; we have exhibitors from Pretoria who attend our events.

“We invite you to come and see what we are all about.”
