Doing good in the name of Mandela

Babies showered with love and attention for Mandela Day.

To commemorate Madiba’s legacy, the Do More Foundation provided nearly 7 000 nutritious meals to vulnerable children and adults this Mandela Day.

And with close to 700 volunteers pitching in to prepare and deliver a cooked lunch to organisations across South Africa, it was a great way for ordinary people to “do more” for those in need.

Founded by RCL Foods, one of South Africa’s leading food producers, the Do More Foundation was recently established for exactly that purpose – to do more for the most vulnerable members of society by collaborating with like-minded organisations to ease hunger, support early childhood development and care for animals.

The foundation’s core belief is that achieving strong, sustainable solutions depends on partnerships between a range of stakeholders – from corporates to NGOs, NPOs and government departments – to create a better future for the most vulnerable members of society.

“The heroes in this model are the recipients themselves, as well as the ordinary people who give of their time, energy and resources to make a difference.

“That’s why Mandela Day is such an appropriate first event for the foundation.

“It’s collaborative and it’s all about people putting people first in true Madiba spirit,” said foundation executive and trustee, Warren Farrer.

Proof of people’s appetite for “doing more” was evident in the massive response to the foundation’s call for Mandela Day volunteers.

Over 660 employees from 27 RCL Foods sites helped prepare hot meals for 31 organisations across the country – ranging from crèches and schools to disability facilities, orphanages, old age homes and community centres, between June 28 and July 18.

On Thursday the RCL Foods Do More Foundation visited the babies at the El-Shammah Home for Abandoned Babies and Place of Safety in Primrose, for an early Mandela Day.

The team donated various items, including baby formula and nappies to the home, and spent some time playing with the babies and learning about the home.
