Guns, ammo found in speeding Golf on N3 highway in Germiston

Germiston Flying Squad members arrest two and seize guns and ammunition.

Noticing a VW Golf travelling at high speed on the N3 highway in the direction of Germiston in the early hours of Thursday morning, Germiston Flying Squad members gave chase.

The officers, WO Steven Ramollo and Const Steven Malungete, managed to get the driver of the vehicle to stop at about 1.15am near the Grey Avenue off-ramp.

The two male occupants of the vehicle were ordered to exit the car and the members searched the vehicle.

“They found three firearms, an AK47, an R5 and a Z88 pistol hidden inside the boot where the spare wheel should have been,” said Capt André de Jager, spokesman for the Ekurhuleni West SAPS cluster.

“The suspects, aged 50 and 35 respectively, were arrested and taken to the Alberton Police Station.”

The AK47 did not have a serial number but the handgun and R5 were reported as stolen and have a KwaZulu-Natal case number.

Ammunition was also found in the vehicle, namely 31 AK47 rounds, 20 R5 rounds and 47 9mm rounds.

The men will be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of stolen firearms.

The VW Golf was taken to VIS (Vehicle Investigation Services) to be examined.

The SAPS is investigating whether the firearms can be linked to any other cases where firearms of this type have been used.
