Community joins hands to help Raquel

Efforts continue to help raise funds for four-year-old Raquel Barnard Stewart.

Gathering clouds and the cold breeze last Saturday morning didn’t deter community members from heeding the call to attend Raquel Barnard Stewart’s (4) fund-raising event.

Raquel from Primrose East was born with a congenital heart defect known as Tetrology of Fallot (GCN, June 30, “Little heart needs fixing”).

Due to her condition she needs life-saving heart surgery which costs a steep R650 000.

To cover the cost of the surgery, Raquel’s family held a fund-raising event at the Sunnyridge Primary School sports fields.

Jumping castles and other forms of entertainment were among the activities enjoyed by the children on the day.

“We were worried about the weather and thought people would not attend – but they did, and it was amazing,” said Raquel’s grandmother, Sandra Barnard.

“The turnout was great and we are happy with everyone who came.”

Circinus Security Services, Meags Collectables, Party Animals and other craft stalls were also present to lend their support.

All the money raised from the event will go into Raquel’s fund.

The total amount raised was R14 767.

Raquel’s mother, Charlene, was also grateful for the support.

“So many people attending shows how much support we have,” said Charlene.

“Thank you to everyone who came, we really appreciate the support.”

Another event will be held to continue raising funds for Raquel.

Daleen Vorster, from Celebrino EventOvation, will be holding a fund-raiser, on July 29, at Laerskool Die President, in Astronomy Road, Fishers’ Hill, from 9am.

There is lots of fun to look forward to with obstacle tracks, food and drinks, a climbing wall, a starship explorer, an inflatable maze, a mechanical surfboard and bull and flea market stalls.

For more information or to book stands or stalls, contact Daleen on 011 679-5699 or 083 960 6870.
