Second term for Rotary presidents

Every year, members of the Germiston Rotary Club meet for their annual, prestigious presidential induction dinner.

This year, the members came together at Majestic Garden Nursery, in Lambton, for their 89th event.

Last year, Benaud Barker took over as Germiston Rotary Club’s president and his wife Wendy was the new president of the Rotary Anns Club.

This year’s induction saw the couple taking up the reins for a second year.

“It is my greatest pleasure to address you as the out-going and new Rotary Anns president for the year 2017 to 2018,” said Wendy.

“Our logo for this year is ‘Rotary making a difference’ and I think it is an appropriate logo for those who are involved in Rotary in any form, especially for the Anns.

“They are women who give of themselves time and time again, asking for nothing more than to be able to make a difference to those less fortunate in our community.

“It is a great honour and privilege to be able to serve together with the Anns from our club for another year as the Anns president.

Wendy also shared some of her goals for the year.

“We intend to invest in bigger projects, this year, that will make a noticeable difference in the areas that we support,” said Wendy.

“My first goal is to identify which project we are going to invest in and put plans in motion to get started with them as quickly as possible.”

Benaud also took to the stand and said, “The last time that a president served two terms was in 1941 and 1942.

“Times are changing and I think the important thing for the Rotary club is that we have to change and stay relevant.

“We need to make a difference and be relevant in our community.

“The challenge for us this year, as a club, is to look at ourselves and ask what it is that we do that makes a difference and makes us relevant.

“It is also important that we continue the work that we did last year and build relationships with the people and organisations in our community.

“I look forward to the year and it is a great opportunity to lead in the club.”

The night also served as an award ceremony and induction of new members.

Awards were given for the following:

Paul Harris Fellow award:

• Lyall Moore.
• Ivor Rimmer.
• Charles Kane.
• Rhonda Kane.

Merit award for service to the community:

• Gail du Preez – principal of Dinwiddie Primary School.
• Retha du Toit – principal of Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston.
• Diane Herbst – principal of Tic Toc Nursery School.

New members were also inducted on the evening.

New Rotary Anns:

• Alta de Beer.
• Lornette Joseph.
• Rietta Pieterse.
• Onesta Nel.

The new Rotarian inducted was Fillipus (Flip) Pieterse.

The 100 per cent attendance awards were given to Joyce Hogg, Gail Abel, Pat Pretorius and Lyn Opie.
