EMPD officers make arrests after routine stop

Four suspects arrested, one vehicle and an unlicensed firearm recovered.

A routine stop of a suspicious-looking maroon VW Golf, with four occupants, just off Sontonga Road, in Katlehong, last Sunday, led to the arrest of four people.

It also led to the recovery of a stolen VW Polo, the discovery of a vehicle tracker unit belonging to a stolen Toyota Dyna truck and the recovery of an unlicensed firearm.

“Upon searching the maroon VW Golf, EMPD Katlehong precinct officers discovered the unlicensed firearm, loaded with live rounds, to which none of the four occupants claimed ownership,” said Chief-Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the spokesperson for the EMPD.

“A few metres away from the maroon Golf was a white VW Polo.

“Community members alerted the EMPD officers to the fact that the occupants of the Golf were seen fidgeting with the Polo earlier.

“The Polo was inspected and found to have had its dashboard damaged, as well as its ignition.

“Upon further investigation, the officers located a vehicle tracker unit, which was confirmed by the vehicle tracking company to belong to a stolen Toyota Dyna truck, in a nearby field.”

This VW Polo was recovered by EMPD Katlehong precinct officers just off Santonga Road, in Katlehong, last Sunday.

Contact with the owner of the recovered Polo confirmed that the Dyna truck and the Polo were both stolen from his business premises in Germiston either late last Saturday night or in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

The owner said the main entrance gate to his premises had been broken.

The recovered Polo and the Golf used by the suspects were taken to the Benoni SAPS pound for safekeeping while the suspects and the recovered firearm were taken to the Ramokonopi Police Station, in Katlehong.

Charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as suspicion of theft of motor vehicles were registered against the four suspects, whose ages are between 35 and 40 years old.

They were expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court last Monday.
