EMPD targets drinking and driving on Ekurhuleni’s highways

EMPD’s weekend Ses’fikile blitz on metro’s highways targeted drinking and driving.

EMPD Freeway Unit members were here, there and everywhere, on Ekurhuleni’s highways last weekend.

“They were on the lookout for those who had imbibed alcohol and were behind the wheel endangering other law-abiding motorists and road users,” said Chief-Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

The focus was on hotspot areas on the R21, N3, N12 and R59 freeways, as well as their on- and off-ramps.

EMPD officers nabbed 41 drivers.

Nine of these were arrested on the N3 in Germiston and one in Primrose, last Friday.

The other drivers arrested for being under the influence of intoxicating liquor, last Friday, were nabbed on the R21 near the Voortrekker off-ramp, the N3 near the Barry Marais exit in Alberton, Dawn Park and Alberton.

The operation continued last Saturday and EMPD officer arrested a further 14 drivers in the Vosloorus area and last Sunday one person was arrested in Elsburg.

All the 41 drivers were charged with drinking and driving at the Bedfordview, Germiston, Alberton, Dawn Park, Kempton Park and Primrose police stations, respectively, and were expected to appear in the respective magistrates’ courts, last Monday.
