Rondebult residents say ‘Enough is enough’

The Rondebult area has seen an escalation of a number of different crimes recently.

The community of Rondebult was educated about escalating crime in the area, last Sunday, by members of the Elsburg SAPS, Alberton SAPS, a representative of the Department of Community Safety and the local CPF.

People gathered at the Rondebult sports grounds where the police discussed issues of house robberies, house break-ins, domestic violence and sexual offences with the community.

“The community voiced their concerns and demanded a police station in their area,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

The Elsburg police’s station commander Col Linah Thethe addressed the community members and advised them to work hand-in-hand with the police with the motive of preventing crime in the area and also to help root out criminals who are terrorising their area.

Various safety tips were relayed to the people to assist them in preventing crime.

“The community members, who came in their numbers to raise their concerns, came up with the solution of having groups of community patrollers in each section of the area to help reduce crime,” said Phooko.

The deputy chairperson for the Elsburg Sector Three CPF Zola Nongongo encouraged the residents to form neighbourhood watches in their sections as they have serious challenges in Rondebult.

He added that they should conduct street patrols every day to prevent trio crimes (house break-ins, business robberies and hijackings) and he emphasised the importance of patrolling and visibility in the area as this helps limit criminal activities.

“The Rondebult residents have said enough is enough and they are ready to reduce crime in their area and to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice,” said Phooko.

The Department of Community Safety’s representative Khehla Khambule reminded community members that they must refrain from taking the law into their own hands and must work with the police with the aim of reducing crime.
