Operations in industrial areas go full steam ahead

Elsburg police continue operations to reduce crime in the industrial areas.

The Elsburg police conducted a road show with the objective of disrupting criminal activities in their policing area, last Tuesday, from 8am.

The police were joined by members of the EMPD and various security companies.

Officers went all out to create a safe and secure environment in the industrial areas in Elsburg and Wadeville.

Stop-and-searches were conducted, people were searched next to the roads and police maintained high visibility in hotspot areas.

“Most of the people who terrorise the industrial areas are from Katlehong and Thokoza,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

“Motorists are also experiencing a lot of problems with these people as they climb onto trucks while they are in motion and offload steel by throwing it off the moving truck, endangering other motorists’ lives and damaging vehicles.

“This is happening mainly in Dekema and Osborn roads in Wadeville.”

Phooko added that in one hotspot area where several people were searched, dagga weighing 0.010 grams was found in the possession of a 56-year-old man and eight suspicious men, suspected to be terrorising the industrial areas, were profiled.

“Since we have started these interventions, crime, including theft, business burglaries, theft from a motor vehicle, theft out of a motor vehicle and hijackings have begun to decrease,” said Phooko.
