Update: Shops looted during Makause informal settlement protest

Makause informal settlement residents demand better service delivery.

It has been reported that a number of shops surrounding and within the Makause informal settlement have been looted by protesters during a service delivery protest in the area.

“We are currently helping the shop owners to move their stock to safety,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The protest began early this morning, and was described as peaceful, with roads surrounding the settlement being closed by police as a precaution.

“We, with the help of the EMPD will continue to monitor the situation,” said Maome.

More details will follow as they become available.
