The Germiston City News received a call on Friday May 12 from Cruywagen Park resident Wayne Draper, who reported a dangerous open hole in Van Deventer Street.
The hole had reportedly been open since 2016, after being dug by the metro in order for repairs to be carried out on a water valve; however, it was not covered once the repairs were completed.
In the months that followed, the hole was used by residents to dump and burn rubbish, with Draper himself almost falling into it.
The hole had become of great concern to residents because they were worried that the dumping and burning of rubbish would cause damage to the water valve or mean that repairs would not be able to carried out in the area.
Both Draper and the GCN reported the matter to the metro and within a week a team of technicians had responded, covering the hole and installing a valve cover.
Draper thanked the metro for their swift turn-around time.
