Pilot dies in light aircraft crash near R59 highway

Emergency services responded to a light aircraft crash on Sunday.

One male pilot was declared dead by Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) paramedics after the light aircraft he was flying crashed near the R59 highway south bound to Vereeniging today (May 21).

Rescue teams from both Tokoza and Palm Ridge fire stations, promptly responded to the scene.

“On arrival, the body of the pilot with poly trauma was found still trapped inside the wreckage,” said William Ntaldi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“Pre-hospital medical treatment was initiated and unfortunately the patient didn’t respond positively to the treatment and was declared dead on scene.”

The scene was handed over to the SAPA who at the same time contacted the South African Civil Aviation Authority to come to the scene to conduct further investigations.

“The only available information on scene was that the aircraft took off from Rand Airport but its destination was unknown,” said Ntladi.
