Nurses showered with love and appreciation

Life Roseacres Hospital showed their appreciation for their nursing staff with a special International Nurses Day ceremony.

International Nurses’ Day is celebrated annually on May 12.

The day honours nurses around the world for their selfless dedication to the needs of their patients.

The Life Roseacres Hospital, in Primrose, joined in the celebration of the day celebration, on Friday, by hosting a special presentation for its nurses, with messages of encouragement and praise from the management.

The theme chosen this year by the Life Healthcare group was “A Voice to Lead”, which aligns with some of the company’s core values of performance, pride and passion for people.

Sophie Sibisi, the nursing manager of the hospital, opened the events programme by thanking all the nurses at the hospital for their tireless efforts to improve the lives of patients and reminded them that nursing is an art.

“When nurses go to sleep at night they should rest well, knowing they did all they could to help the people in their care,” she said.

Bets van der Berg, specialist perioperative practice, from Life Healthcare’s head office, then took to the floor with some words of encouragement for the nurses.

“We often forget when things get tough that nursing is an art, and though you may at times be overwhelmed, never forget your gentle touch as a nurse because that makes all the difference in a patient’s life,” she said.

During the celebrations Ruth Mohlabe, a nurse in the hospital’s medical ward, was honoured as one of the Great 100 Nurses of 2017.

This award is given to the 100 top nurses, within the Life Healthcare group, who have made a significant difference to the profession of nursing and in the lives of patients, peers, students and the community at large.

Nominees are judged on professionalism, compassionate care-giving, clinical competence and leadership qualities.

The 100 top great nurses will be nursing ambassadors for Life Healthcare and the nursing profession at large.

Mohlabe was overwhelmed by the award and shyly thanked her unit manager and all the nurses she works with for showing her the ropes during her 10 months at the hospital.

Other words of encouragement, on the day, came from Lourens Bekker, chief operations officer, Dr Sharon Vasuthevan, nursing and quality executive, and Kurt Wylie, business operations executive, of Life Healthcare.

“Every nurse has the ability to make a significant difference to healthcare delivery,” Bekker said.

“This year we celebrate our nurses for being a leading voice in achieving the ultimate patient experience by being champions of change,” said Vasuthevan.

“The day offers us an opportunity to honour our nurses who are committed to the compassionate and thoughtful care of our patients,” said Wylie.

The celebrations came to a close with the nurses taking the Nurses’ Pledge together, reaffirming their commitment to high quality healthcare.
