Take care of your animals in severe weather conditions

Animals need protection from the elements.

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) is appealing to members of the public to take extra precautions for their animals during the severe weather conditions forecast for this weekend by the South African Weather Service.

The South African Weather Service issued a severe weather warning that could lead to disruptive and disastrous conditions.

The weather conditions include disruptive snowfalls, heavy rain, flooding and severe thunderstorms in certain parts of the country, especially in Gauteng and certain parts of the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga provinces.

The NSPCA urges animal owners to keep their pets indoors and ensure that their other animals that live outdoors have access to adequate shelter for protection against the cold and wet weather conditions.

Animals should also be provided with sufficient bedding in such weather conditions.

“It is a legal requirement for animals to be provided with adequate protection against weather conditions. Animals can also suffer as a result of inclement weather,” said senior inspector Jaco Pieterse of the NSPCA.

The public is encouraged to report any animal abuse to their local SPCA or the NSPCA.
