Germiston High School was abuzz with festivities last Saturday, as the school hosted a centenary market day to celebrate its 100th year.
“This is our second event as we also held a rowing regatta earlier this year, in celebration of the centenary year,” said the school’s acting principal, Renée Goosen.
“The centenary market day was more for the learners, ex-learners, staff and ex-staff.
“A memory-lane tour of the school’s premises was among the activities organised for the day.”
Goosen also said they renamed the school hall from the gym hall to the Keith Maybery Rowing Hall.
“The renaming of the school hall was in honour of the late Reverend Keith Maybery, who had a great impact on the school and was involved with Germiston High his whole life basically,” said Goosen.
People in attendance were also spoilt for choice with the different food and craft stalls put up.
Former learner, Kyle Gysman, who matriculated in 2015, was pleased to re-visit the school.
“I am happy to be here after such a long time, it just brings back all the memories created at the school,” said Gysman.
“I miss all the teachers that influenced me during my time at the school, they were very helpful.
“I also miss the school vibe and friends, but all-in-all, it is still a good school as it was back then.”
The school’s current learners; Farisai Hove (15), Jessica Chauke (14) and Ntando Ntongana (17) all felt that it is exciting to be a part of the centenary year as it forms part of history, among other things.
The trio also believes that being part of this milestone gives them a chance to make their mark and difference in the school.
“This is a great opportunity for us to grow and create good memories at the school,” said Ntongana.
“I feel privileged to be part of such a great school.”
Member of the Student Governing Body (SGB), Chamu Munemo, was also present at the event and said; “This, indeed, is a great time to be a part of the SGB and milestone.”
Music, inflatables and rides, setup at one of the school’s fields, were among the things enjoyed by both children and adults.
Goosen also told the GCN that more events are being planned to continue the celebrations.
“We are also looking at hosting a gala dinner and high tea later on in the year,” she said.
“This is a momentous time for the school.”
