Ekurhuleni’s plans to build 100 000 houses in the next five years is on track and delivering impressive new homes.
The metro launched the Mega Housing project, in 2016.
The project made way for the construction of housing at the Germiston Fire Station and in Delville Extension Nine.
MMC for Human Settlements Clr Lesiba Mpya launched the two completed social housing projects in Delville Extension Nine on April 13.
The launch marked the completion of phase one of the project.
Mpya said phase two is still under construction but also nearing completion.
“We are happy with the progress so far,” said Mpya.
“Plans for the project going forward include the development of a crèche among other things.”
In his address, Mpya also referred to the standard of the units.
“Our team at Ekurhuleni Housing Company (EHC) have produced two projects that are in a class of their own,” he said.
“We have changed the perception that our poor communities must be exposed to cheap and substandard products.
“The metro has now embodied the concept of dignity in public housing.
“People will take pride in these environments.”
The GCN caught up with some of the beneficiaries who are eagerly waiting to move into their homes in May.
Javulani Chauke and Esther Manganyi have received the keys to their new home.
“I was passing by the Germiston CBD when I saw the construction works and when I inquired I was told to apply for accommodation,” said Esther.
“I submitted all the required documents and was thrilled when my application was approved.”
“I can’t explain what I am feeling right now, I am filled with joy and excitement, especially looking at the standard of our new home,” said Javulani.
Another couple ready to enjoy living in their new home is Pimani and Thinawanga Mavhunga.
“It is very neat and I am very happy,” said Thinawanga.
Pimani also agreed with his wife and said, “This is overwhelming; it is amazing and affordable at the same time.
“I am impressed with what the metro has done, it is fantastic.”
Mpya also said more people are welcome to apply for accommodation.
“We have received 1 500 applications and 90 of them have been approved and others are still in the administration process,” said Mpya.
“There are a number of factors considered before applicants are granted approval; we have to make sure that they are able to afford the homes, among other things.”
Oupa Tshabalala, ward 35 councillor, urged people to take care of the new buildings.
“Please protect and look after these beautiful buildings,” he said.
“Although they will be maintained, we are also required to take good care of them.”
In closing, Mpya announced that the area at the Germiston Fire Station is, as of April 13, referred to as the Chris Hani Village.
