Bonnets galore at Easter celebration

GAFA Protea Old Age Home holds fun Easter Bonnet Parade.

Even though the rain came down, the spirit of fun was not dampened at the GAFA (Germiston Association for the Aged) Protea Old Age Home’s Easter Bonnet Parade and fun day, on Wednesday.

The elderly came out donned in their best Easter bonnets for a fun-filled morning of cupcake decorating, socialising and a celebration of Easter and its meaning.

Rev Dr Morgan Ellis, from the Anglican Church and a resident at one of Protea’s assisted living homes, opened the proceedings with a prayer and a special poem.

Theresa Dubb, who is on the board of directors for GAFA, explained to guests the significance of the Easter period, not only for Christians but also people of the Jewish faith, with Passover being celebrated.

Then it was fun all the way with Lourens Botha, a social auxillary worker at GAFA, dressed as the Easter Bunny, making everyone laugh and ensuring they all had a good time.

The all-important judging of the Easter bonnets took place with Theresa Bitter taking first place, followed by Tharien Barnard in second, Val Claasen in third, Nellie Zikhali in fourth and Noeline Botma in fifth.

A team prize was awarded to the catering team from Reef Caterers.
