Man confesses to Sunnyridge house break-in and theft

Local security officers and community patrollers assist police in arrest.

A 34-year-old man was recently arrested by the Primrose police on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property.

Local security officers and a community patroller assisted in the arrest, which took place in Harlem Street, in Gerdview – after receiving a report of a house break-in and theft in Koedoe Street, in Sunnyridge.

“A message was received on a local CPF WhatsApp group alleging that there had been a house break-in in Koedoe Street,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

CPG Security personnel were the first to respond, but after seeing nothing out of the ordinary in the front of the property they moved inside the property with the assistance of the home’s owner.

“She noticed that the home’s backroom had been broken into and items were missing, including two golf bags and clubs. We also viewed some video footage at the home,” explained Francois Harms, of CPG Security.

The security company personnel recognised the man in the footage, and were sure they had seen him earlier carrying the allegedly stolen golf bags and clubs.

“We travelled to the last known address of the suspect, to confirm if it was the same man,” said Harms.

Police were called to the scene and, together with local security officers, arrested the man.

“The suspect confessed that he was at the scene of the crime and had stolen several items including two golf bags containing golf clubs, a CCTV lens, a tap set, two tents, two computer hard drives, tools and aluminium piping, among other things,” said Maome.

He was arrested and taken to the Primrose Police Station.

He will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

“We thank everybody who assisted in this arrest,” said Maome.

“This success proves we are here to help the community and make a difference,” said Harms.
