Two decades later Chris Hani’s legacy still lives on

The metro has a busy calendar of events planned in April in celebration of the life of Chris Hani.

This year marks the 24th anniversary since the murder of freedom fighter, Chris Hani.

To pay tribute to the anti-apartheid leader, the metro will continue to roll out programmes, which reveal the ideals which Hani stood for.

These include the provision of decent housing, primary health care and the alleviation of hunger.

In ensuring that the principles that Hani stood for do not die, the metro conferred the Freedom of the City on Chris Hani in November 2006, thereby declaring April 10 the start of Chris Hani Month.

To kick-start the Chris Hani Month celebrations on April 10, the metro will convene a wreath-laying ceremony to be attended by a senior delegation of political leaders and the Hani family at the Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Elspark.

This will be followed by a memorial lecture on Chris Hani at the Boksburg Civic Centre.

The Chris Hani Photographic Exhibition depicting the life of Chris Hani will be opened for public viewing for free, from April 10 to 30.

The exhibition will be open from 9am to 4.30pm on weekdays and from 8am to noon on weekends at Chris Hani’s former home situated at 2 Hakea Crescent, Dawn Park, Boksburg.

Some of the events to commemorate the life of Hani include the following:
