Community unites for #sawillrise protest

The community take peaceful stand against corruption in South Africa and called for President Jacob Zuma to step down.

The cold, grey weather did little to deter Germiston community members from gathering on the Cydonia Road bridge in Primrose Hill on Friday morning.

The gathering was aimed at taking a stand against corruption in the country and calling for President Jacob Zuma to step down.

“Today is not about race, religion, creed or ideology; it is the issue of a critical leadership change for the betterment of South Africa,” said Nico Booysen.

Shelley Bainbridge shared her views on the protest.

“We should be doing this every week and taking a stand together to bring about change,” said Bainbridge.

Ali Hemmant felt strongly that former president Nelson Mandela would be greatly disappointed in the state of the country, if he were still alive.

“We are trying to make a difference and I feel it would make Mandela feel very happy.

“I feel that in time we will come right,” she said.

The peaceful protest received an overwhelming amount of support from motorists passing on the N3 highway, below the bridge, and motorists passing on Cydonia Road.

Motorists hooted and flashed their lights to the cheers of the gathered crowd.
