Women and girls warned to heed police’s call

Police, community patrollers and members of the Primrose Crime Prevention Youth Desk flooded the Marathon informal settlement in a door-to-door rape awareness campaign.

Police have noted an increase in the number of rape cases being reported in the informal settlements of Primrose.

To combat this, the Primrose police, with the help of community patrollers and members of the Primrose Crime Prevention Youth Desk, visited the Marathon informal settlement to launch a door-to-door rape awareness campaign.

“During January a number of rape cases were reported in the Marathon informal settlement.

“We have noticed that abuse of alcohol may be contributing towards the rapes,” Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police, said.

The group visited women and girls in the informal settlement giving them a detailed brochure of safety tips and encouraged them to not walk alone after dark.

“We hope our community will use the tips to their advantage,” said Maome.

The Primrose police’s station commander Col Albertina Vesi thanked the community patrollers and members of the youth desk who helped in conveying the message to the area, and hopes the community will take the message to heart.
